Private Nathaniel Beck

The background of this man is not known at present. On his enlistment papers he gave his age as 19 years 9 months, his occupation as groom, his address as Blackrock, County Dublin, his religion as Presbyterian, and his next of kin as his sister Marion Beck of Kingstown. ('Sister' was later deleted and replaced with 'friend'.) It has not been possible, however, to confirm these details in other documents such as the Irish Census.

Nathaniel Beck enlisted in the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron at Newtownards on 17 September 1915 (No. UD/296).

The same day that he enlisted, however, Beck was reported absent without leave, remaining at large for four days. He was awarded 24 hours detention and to forfeit five days' pay.

On 23 September 1915 at Newtownards he was discharged, having 'unlawfully enlisted' (paragraph 392(ii), King's Regulations. His military character was recorded as 'bad'.
